Cataracts
Cataract Symptoms and Treatment
Cataracts can lead to severely decreased central vision and discomfort driving at night.
Nearly all cataracts take a long time to develop and are thus more common as we age. Cataracts cause cloudy spots in a part of the eye called the lens, which is responsible for gathering and focusing light, reflecting it to the back of the eye onto the retina where the brain receives the signal and enables you to see. A minor surgical procedure is required to replace the cloudy lens of the eye with an implant.
The knowledgeable optometrists at 20/20 Eye Care can refer patients requiring cataract surgery to an appropriate, reputable ophthalmologist for the procedure. Everyone’s eyes are different and there are many factors we consider when choosing the best surgeon for each patient. We also provide pre- and post-op care for our patients requiring cataract surgery.
Cataracts are best detected with early, regular screenings. At 20/20 Eye Care, we utilize state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to identify the early warning signs of many eye problems, including cataracts. These tools include:
- ATLAS Corneal Topography: A noninvasive imaging technique that allows doctors to map the curvature and shape of the cornea (the outer eye), which is responsible for a large percentage of the eyes’ refractive power and can have a significant impact on vision.
- Specular Microscopy: A noninvasive photographic technique that looks closely at the cells of the cornea. Some conditions of the eye, like Fuch’s Dystrophy and astigmatism, can affect the health of your cornea.
